A recent phishing campaign leveraging an open redirection vulnerability on Indeed’s job search platform has been discovered. Open redirection happens when an application (by design or unintentionally) causes redirection to an untrusted external domain. The phishing campaign aims to steal Microsoft credentials by redirecting victims to a fake Microsoft login page.
This phishing campaign primarily targets executives and C-level individuals in various sectors. Victims receive phishing emails containing links that appear to lead to indeed.com. However, clicking these links redirects to a fake Microsoft login page. The phishing kit (EvilProxy framework) used in the attack acts as a reverse proxy to intercept credentials and session cookies, potentially allowing attackers to bypass multifactor authentication mechanisms.
Individuals and organizations should exercise caution and verify links and emails, even from reputable sources. Implementing robust email security measures and strong multifactor authentication (MFA) methods, such as number matching, can strengthen defenses against such phishing campaigns. Security awareness training and social engineering tests are recommended on a regular basis.

A proof-of-concept exploit for a critical vulnerability affecting Progress Software’s WS_FTP Server file-sharing platform has been released. The proof-of-concept was released while customers were still in the process of patching, allowing for successful mass exploitation. The vulnerability is tracked as CVE-2023-40044 and is a .NET deserialization vulnerability in the Ad Hoc Transfer Module.
CVE-2023-40044 can be exploited from an unauthenticated perspective and allows for remote code execution on the underlying operating system via a simple HTTP request. While mass exploitation will be automated, attackers may leverage successful exploitation to establish persistence and launch manual attacks against targeted networks if remediation steps are not taken.
Progress Software has released fixes for CVE-2023-40044, and upgrading to the most recent version is recommended. Additionally, exploitation can be prevented by disabling the vulnerable Ad Hoc Transfer module. Exploited servers should be immediately quarantined and checked for persistence access and lateral movement attempts.

Microsoft recently issued emergency security updates software, such as Edge, Teams, and Skype, to address two zero-day vulnerabilities in open-source libraries. The first is CVE-2023-4863, which is a heap buffer overflow in the WebP code library, potentially leading to crashes or arbitrary code execution. The second vulnerability is CVE-2023-5217 and involves a heap buffer overflow in the VP8 encoding of the libvpx video codec library, with similar potential consequences.
Both vulnerabilities were observed being exploited in the wild, though very few details exist. However, exploitation that has been occurring could be related to spyware attacks. Generally speaking, such vulnerabilities could be exploited by a user visiting a malicious site or interacting with a malicious link or file. Note that vulnerabilities in browsers such as Edge could result in stolen browser information such as saved credentials or similar data.
Some applications should be updated automatically, but administrators should ensure this is occurring. Additionally, endpoints, and especially end-user systems, should be monitored and protected through Endpoint Detection & Response software. Additionally, vulnerability scanning should be completed periodically to ensure critical vulnerabilities are being addressed.

Exim developers released patches for multiple zero-day vulnerabilities affecting Exim mail servers. One vulnerability tracked as CVE-2023-42115 is due to an out-of-bounds write flaw in the SMTP service (listens on port 25) and can be exploited by a remote unauthenticated attacker.
Exploitation could result in code execution in the context of the SMTP service account. Note that exploitation is dependent on the use of external authentication on targeted servers. Exploitation can potentially be used to establish a foothold in a targeted environment and launch additional attacks.
Patches should be applied when they are available. If the vulnerable configuration is in use, monitor for indicators of compromise and restrict access to the mail service if detected. Note that widespread exploitation has not been observed. Generally speaking, external vulnerability scanning can be performed to identify public-facing services to understand the attack surface better and identify critical vulnerabilities.
