Scammers Manipulate People’s Trust in QR Codes, How to Avoid QR Code Scams

A QR Code is very easy to make and there are free options online for anyone to use, but it’s also easy for scammers to take advantage of them as well. Since a QR code is a barcode, people normally scan without thinking to get directed quickly to websites. Malicious scammers take advantage of this trust because website URLs are hidden.

Scammers make fake QR codes and find ways to replace the ones a company uses to direct unsuspecting victims to malicious websites designed to steal sensitive information. Typical places for this switch can happen at restaurants, parking meters, mail, or even an email

Always ask yourself these questions  before you think about scanning a QR Code:

◈ Is the QR code in a public place?

◈ Are you directed to a payment site that has signs of a fake website scam, such as bad grammar, poor design, or an odd URL?

◈ Is the URL name different from what you expected and is the website secure?
