Ping! Is That Really Your Boss Messaging You? Scammers Know Where You Work

Phishing emails in the workplace have evolved to more accessible platforms and our mobile devices are no exception to these lucrative cyber attacks.  Lookout Security’s Chief Strategy Officer, Aaron Cockerill, stated in a Cyber News article that “a restricted user interface on a smartphone fools users into doing dangerous things.” Scammers love people who put all of their trust in their mobile devices, and smishing working citizens is the perfect audience.

“Scammers find out where you work and pose as the CEO or as other executives,” according to the BBB. Scammers will try to make the experience seem personal by attacking people who put their trust in their jobs. Ping! You get a message from your boss saying he’s stuck in a meeting and needs you to reply. Make sure to consider these 4 things to avoid being scammed.

  • Do you recognize the number? Scammers will almost certainly use fake phone numbers and emails to send you SMS directly to your phones. There are many apps and tools to achieve these fake numbers.
  • Does the text message seem urgent? If you are being asked to do something “urgently” or in a time-sensitive manner, this is often a tactic to get you to act on your feet, so you feel rushed to make a bad decision.
  • Personally check with the source. Sensitive information and transactions should never be made over the phone. Make important arrangements in person or through the approved, established contact platforms. Check with your boss.
  • Does something not feel right? If you get a gut feeling that things seem phishy, it most likely is. Just block, delete, and let your company know so you can protect your coworkers.
