Security Audit at Dept of Interior Shows Damning Report of Password Management

Seems a large number of people at the Department of the Interior (DOI), need to step up their password creation efforts, according to a recent audit report. The Inspector General carried out a security audit of the password management policies at the DOI and a whopping 21% of the entire user base, 18,000 of the department’s users in fact, were flagged as using passwords that were far too easy to crack.

16% of user accounts were cracked within 90 minutes during the audit process. Some of these included:

Password-1234
Br0co0$2012
Password123$
Summ3rSun2020!
0rlando_0000
ChangeIt123
ChangeItN0w!

The department’s reliance on “passwords only” as the only way of protecting important systems and employee user accounts contradicts the government’s cybersecurity guidance of mandating stronger two-factor authentication. Multi-factor authentication (MFA) requirements were never implemented by the department.
