TSA Mandates Stronger Cybersecurity Measures for Aviation Sector

TSA instructs airport and aircraft operators to improve their cybersecurity resilience and prevent infrastructure disruption and degradation.
– Eduard Kovacs

The US Transportation Security Adminstration (TSA) has issued an emergency amendment requiring airport and aircraft operators to enhance their cybersecurity resilience.

As a direct response to persistent threats against the aviation sector and other critical infrastructure, operators must now develop plans for improving their resilience, preventing infrastructure disruption and degradation, and assessing the effectiveness of their measures in order to comply with the new requirements.

Operators must also develop access control mechanisms, incident detection and response policies, and ensure their systems are not left unpatched.

The TSA is working closely with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) and industry partners to implement these measures, which come just months after the agency issued a directive for improving the cybersecurity of railroad operations in the US. The new requirements for the aviation sector come just days after the White House released its National Cybersecurity Strategy, underscoring the importance of protecting critical infrastructure against cyber threats.
