New Threat Warning Issued by FBI and CISA on “BianLian” Ransomware

A joint cybersecurity alert has been issued by the FBI, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), and Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) about the BianLian ransomware and data extortion group.

The BianLian group has been conducting attacks since June 2022 and has actively targeted healthcare. The ransomware actor that develops and uses ransomware in its attacks uses tactics such as exfiltrating private data from victims’ networks before files are encrypted. They threaten to leak stolen data if the ransom does not get paid.

This year, the ransomware groups switched their tactics to extortion-only attacks where files are not encrypted after exfiltration. These tactics have been successful because the risk of releasing stolen data can be significant to an organization’s downfall.

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) is what gives the BianLian group access to victims’ networks that can be obtained through brute force attacks, weak credentials, purchased credentials from access brokers, or phishing attacks.

The recommended action to avoid such a situation is to limit your use of RDP and other remote desktop services. Authorized remote access solutions should only be used from within the network over approved remote access options, such as virtual private networks (VPNs) or virtual desktop interfaces (VDIs).
