Keeping Children Cyber-Safe

Important Tips for Parents & Educators

Carrying laptops and tablets has become as ubiquitous to school kids today as binders and pencils were 20 years ago.  As k-12 schools around the country start ramping up for the new year, here are a few tips to make sure that children are Cyber-Safe.

The number one advantage you can have in your own personal family or school’s defense against cybercrime, is communication.  Talk with children about the very real dangers that exist online and help them feel comfortable in speaking out if a dangerous cyber incident were to occur.

Public WiFi

Where once we had telephone booths, now we have hotspots.  Be aware of the dangers when letting children use these free hotspots which are almost always unsecured.  Unless a child is using a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on their device, passwords, usernames and any other private data can easily be stolen by threat actors using those same hotspots.

Keep Devices Visible

Just as we wouldn’t allow young children to walk down a dark alleyway in a big city alone at night, we have to be just as vigilant at protecting them from walking down the wrong cyber alleyways as well.  A good safe guard is to ensure they are always using their devices in an open area where you can monitor their activity and the activity of those with whom they may be interacting

Antivirus and Parental Controls

These are simple to install on just about all devices and they can go a long way in protecting children in the cybersecurity landscape.
