GreyCastle Security’s Stellar Team of Interns

Posted June 16, 2021

April is National Internship Awareness Month, and we can’t let it pass by without highlighting our excellent team of interns. GreyCastle Security strongly believes in providing opportunities for students interested in the cybersecurity industry across multiple departments. Interns are given real projects with a significant impact on the business: an intern manages the website you’re reading this on!

We’re incredibly proud of the work our current interns have done. Brooke, Avi, and Connor are a bright group of students, and we look forward to seeing them grow professionally for years to come. GreyCastle Security loves to nurture intern careers – two current managers started within the organization as interns and now lead their own teams and departments.

We sat down with our talented batch of interns this month to learn more about them and what they plan to do in the future.

Introduce yourself! Who are you? What are you studying? Where are you studying? What year are you in?

BE: Hi everyone! ???? My name is Brooke Edstrom and I have been an IT intern at GreyCastle Security for about four months now and I have been loving it! I am from the Mohawk Valley and study Cybersecurity at Utica College where I am about to finish up my final semester. I have a degree in Computer Networking from Herkimer College which is where I developed a love for information security.

AM: Hi! I’m Avi Mukherjee, a 3rd year Computer Engineering major at the University of California-Irvine.

CR: Hello! My name is Connor Roizman and I’m a Software Developer intern in the IT department here at GreyCastle Security. I’ve been here for just over two years and joined GCS in the middle of my freshman year. I’m a senior and Computer Science and Mathematics major at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, just a few minutes from our Troy office.

What would you like to do with your major? What are your career goals?

BE: I enjoy all areas of information technology, but I am particularly drawn to areas including penetration testing, incident response, and digital forensics. I have also found working on an internal IT team to be very fulfilling, which was an option I hadn’t considered before, but discovered through this internship that I really enjoy. I would love to continue to grow as an IT professional and become someone who can make a difference in cybersecurity, no matter how small. I’m not sure where my career will take me, but I feel very fortunate to start my experience here.

AM: In the near future, I would like to be a software developer, but as my career progresses, I can see myself taking on a managerial role.

CR: Right now, my short-term career goals are to gain experience in the field of software development, learning what it’s like to work on code in the industry rather than for a homework assignment in school. Long-term, I think I want to continue down the path of software engineering.

What’s your internship experience with GreyCastle Security been like?

BE: My internship experience has been filled with so much learning and growth for me. It has been a pleasure working under such talented and passionate individuals who have provided me with so much exposure and opportunities to grow as a professional. It has expanded my perspective holistically on the practical nature of cybersecurity and broadened my horizons in terms of career paths. This internship and the members of GreyCastle Security have been significantly instrumental in the development of my professional identity and personal development.

AM: My experience has been great! I have learned so many new technologies and have gained a lot of knowledge about software development that they don’t teach in traditional college courses.

CR: I’ve really enjoyed my past two years with GreyCastle Security. I’ve had the chance to work on many projects that have resulted in software applications utilized by several of our departments. This has been one of my favorite parts of my experience because I had a glimpse at how other departments function instead of solely working within the IT department.

What’s something you’ve learned in your internship you don’t think you would have learned in school?

BE: At college I was exposed to a variety of tools, software, and practices as well as fundamental theories and principals of cybersecurity. However, I was not able to develop a well-rounded comprehension of the real-world application of these concepts. It was almost as if I was seeing Information technology in black and white. Through this internship, I’ve seen how the things I’ve learned in an educational setting can actually apply practically. It allowed me to see this field in color.

AM: I work with development of GreyCastle Security’s internal portal, so I have learned a lot about web development. Our school’s curriculum focuses a lot more on application software, and I have come to learn through my time here that web development is something that more closely aligns with my interests and future career.

CR: Working as a Software Developer intern has given me a significant amount of practical experience that I would have otherwise not learned in school. In my courses, we learn a lot of computer science theory. However, working at GreyCastle Security has given me invaluable experience in practical software development, especially in the realm of web development. Pretty much everything I know about web development today is a result of learning new things while working on projects here.
